Dong Bang Song Hong - the immense delta of the Red River
On the river near Ninh Binh
The Red River (Song Hong) flows through coming from China to the north of Vietnam and then opens out into the Gulf of Tonkin. Its immense, widely ramified delta (Dong Bang Song Hong) is a living space for more than 15 million people. The rank soils are used intensely agriculturally. In the centre of the delta, about 120 km away from the ocean, you find Hanoi, the capital of Viet Nam.
It is the economic centre of the north and is located in the midst of a scenery of lakes and creeks. Particularly the state museums are worth seeing. Near the Gulf of Tonkin you find the important seaport Haiphong. Often only seen as a stopping-off place, the lively town has many nice and hidden temples, parks and boulevards with houses in the colonial style.
