The fortress with the so-called forbidden town which established the former capital Viet Nam in the 19th century according to Chinese model has been appointed by UNESCO to the world cultural heritage.
The richly decorated gates which lead to the kings town are especially impressive. The Thien-Mu Pagoda, a Buddhist temple established in the 16th century is substantially older. A few kilometres afar from Huế you find the impressive imperial graves of which probably the Tu Duc and Khai Dinh are the most imposing.
The tomb of Tu Duc reminds of a Roman triumphal arch while Khai Dinh can be reached by a gigantic staircase which is lined with huge, spiry steeples.
