Turin, Piemont – The former capital of Italy

Mole Antonelliana in Turin
Mole Antonelliana in Turin

In the North-Italian region Piemont you find the former million-metropolis Turin. With about more than 900,000 inhabitants it is the capital of the province Turin and the region Piemont. If you decide for a holiday apartment, flat or a hotel in this town, you spend your holiday in a plain which is limited in the west by the Alps and in the south by the elevations of the Monferrato.

In 1861 Turin became capital of United Italy whereof even today 14 different castles testify. The town could hold this status, nevertheless, within only 4 years and had to transmit its title then to Florence. With the Mole Antonellianam which was built within the years from 1863 to 1880 the landmark of Turin here first has to be called.

This impressive building was planned, actually, as a synagogue. However, the transferring of the capital to Florence forced the city planners to change the large-scale project. If you visit the Mole Antonellianam today, you will find the national film museum in it.

By the way, this building is illustrated on the Italian 2-cent coin what might probably underline its national significance. Beside the many worth seeing buildings, Turin fascinates of course with its typically Italian charm and the joy of life of the inhabitants. With a holiday apartment, pension or a hotel in this town, everybody can get an own picture of Turin.
