The lake is Italy's fourth largest - after Garda, Maggiore and Como. Trasimeno is noted for its islands, one of which can be visited in the summer by boat, the Isola Maggiore, inhabited by fishermen and ladies making lace. The Isola Minore has a Franciscan monastery after St. Francis spent some time there praying and fasting. On the shores of Lake Trasimeno is also where Hannibal, the Carthaginian leader fought a battle with the Romans in 279 B.C.
It has some lovely beaches for sunbathing, swimming and makes a wonderful alternative to a beach holiday. It is surrounded by picturesque medieval villages, olive-groves and vineyards. It is also only a short drive from Perugia, the capital of Umbria.
