Spandau "near Berlin"

Berlin SpandauNot until 1920, did Spandau, the most western quarter of Berlin, lose its self-administration, which is still disapproved of today by some older inhabitants who proudly declare that Spandau does not lie „in“ but „near“ Berlin. But in spite of its location in the outskirts, Spandau by now is virtually in the heart of Berlin thanks to the excellent light rail system and even has its own ICE train station.

This is not a surprise, considering that after all, 224,000 of the 3.5 million inhabitants of Berlin live west of the Havel River – this makes the Spandau district a lot larger than some of the independent cities in the rest of the Federal Republic.
