Sofia, the unknown metropolis

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is framed by mountains and is a very worthwhile aim in the west of the country. It is one of the oldest towns of Europe. The charm of the megacity presents itself to the visitors only halting, because "Serdika", the antique town on which today's Sofia is based, was partially overbuilt and is surrounded by development-areas.

Slavs, Greeks, Romans and Turks left their marks in Sofia and formed a metropolis which - today more European then ever – beams its 3,000 year-old past with pride. Well worth seeing besides the numerous museums are the splendid neo-classical buildings and small churches which are near the imposing “Newski Cathedral”.

It is the town’s landmark. A precious historical construction is the “Rotunda Sweti Georgi” which can be visited in the courtyard of the Sheraton Hotel. Once, there was a Roman thermae beneath. Sofia has become rejuvenated with parks, nice boulevards and residential arrangements and sports facilities.

Connected with the town by a cable railway, the ski-area of the mountains Witosha with its slopes are within reach. In the closer surrounding modern hotels, pensions and holidays flats were formed and draw guests from the whole world.
