Rīga, Latvia

Riga – Capital of Latvia with very nostalgic charme

Riga Cathedral and Castle
Riga Cathedral and Castle

Riga, the capital city of Latvia has been in real the focus of the tourists attention as recently as the independence of the Baltic States. Surely it is a buzzling metropolis with more than 700,000 inhabitants where economy, politics and culture agglomerate. At the same time Riga offers many interesting sights and activities for the tourists.

Naturally the Baltic Sea is one of the main attractions of Riga. The important harbur has played a crucial role for a long time. A natural basin has developed itself at the mouth of the Düna, which offered a good shelter for ships. Today ferries as well as cargo vessels land here.
Additionally the Baltic Sea influences the climate in the whole town of Riga, even during the winter months the Sea emits slightly higher temperatures to the surrounding.

The inner city of Riga in Latvia is anyway, but also in the whole Baltic countries, a gem. It is due to its jugendstil buildings part of the UNESCO world heritage. Many houses with very precious carvings and ornaments. The dome from the 12th century is noticeable which indeed has experienced many alterations and extensions.

Riga does not impress exclusively by its beautiful architecture. No, despite the buzzling life of a metropolis which naturally dominates in the capital city of Latvia many oases of tranquility have been developed. Even directly in the inner-city there are several lavishly designed parks, it is also possible to relax superbly in a zoo with more than 3,000 animals.
