Tartu, Estonia – historical city in the East of Europe

Tartu is after Tallin the second largest town of the European state Estonia. The big metropolis with good 100,000 inhabitants is situated in the central southeast of the country, between the lakes Vörtsjärv and Peipsijärv which at the same time forms the border to Russia.

In Tartu you will find a good choice of holiday apartments, flats and hotels even finally, the region has to offer a lot. The best is to take a walk through the smart Old Town of Tartu. On every street corner you can discover beautiful designed faces of buildings. Moreover, the classical university building which presents, by the way, the only full university of the country is found in the Old Town. Yearly about 440 researchers of the university produce approx. 4,000 scientific publications.

However, the landmark of the town is the wonderful church Johanniskirche which marks the north-easternmost point of the European Gothic brick-lined route. Typically for this church construction are the 1,000 preserved terracotta sculptures.

With its size and the extent they present something unique in Europe. At the night of the 26th of April, 1944 in the course of the Soviet violent combats between the German armed forces and the red army occurred.

While bombing the church it was set on fire and destroyed completely. No more than in 2005 the entire reconstruction could be celebrated. This is a good cause for deciding for a holiday apartment or a hotel in Tartu.
