Sofia (Greek “wisdom”) “Grows but does not get older” is the slogan which the city of Sofia has followed for more than 2000 years. The eternal capital city of Bulgaria, located on the foot of the Vitosha Mountains, on vast terraces of the tributaries of the River Iskar, was already a centre of relaxation in Roman times due to its warm springs.

As one of the oldest European cities and at the same time junction between Europe and the Middle East, Sofia has conserved its antique charm and further developed Bulgaria’s history so that today it is a unique melting pot of the ancient world and the modern age. 

According to its name, the “Sveta Sofia” church is the city’s landmark but the mighty Sveti Nevski Memorial Church overtops the entire historic city with its high belfry. Its twelve bells regularly pervade the unhurried Bulgarian daily routine and make people stop and listen for a moment. At its feet, different architectural styles spread to over 700 buildings in the historic city centre.

Ancient houses present themselves as holiday flats, hotels, guesthouses or holiday rooms and compete for customers. In front of Sofia lie the mighty Vitosha Mountains. The summits of the mountains extend to the blue sky with more than 2000 metres – a mountain range that is specific to tourism.

Paths have been laid out, wells and fireplaces have been built and ski lifts have been installed. Depending on the season, tourists can go in for hikes, ski or climb. Active tourists will find ideal conditions for practising their sports here in Bulgaria.
