Friesland - historical region between mudflats and forests

The province of Friesland is part of the historic Frisian mudflat coast that runs from the Netherlands to the German and Danish North Sea coast. In the north, it follows the province of Holland and is characterised by several different landscapes and the coasts of the North Sea and the huge Ijssel Sea.
Friesland enchants holidaymakers with its natural, friendly people, its unique, diversified scenery and small, charming towns, such as Leeuwarden, Wollwega or Sneek.

Offshore, there are the five West Frisian Islands of Texel, Amerland, Vlieland, Terschelling and Schiermonnikog, which are lined up like pearls on a string. They are popular holiday destinations and offer best conditions to both seaside holidaymakers and water athletes due to their mile-long sandy beaches and dunes. Many of the thatched holiday homes are rented to tourists. The islands can also be discovered by the so-called “island hopping” by sailboat or ferry.

In the coastal hinterland, guests can also spend relaxing holidays close to nature. The densely wooded southeast of Friesland is perfect for long bike and hiking tours. Many of the historic and lovely farm houses were converted into hotels.

The charming and snug towns of Friesland are also worth more than a visit. Many old traditions – such as special national sports or the Frisian language – are kept alive and are still being cultivated here.
