Potsdam city of palaces and gardens

Potsdam, the provincial capital of Brandenburg, lies in a charming forest and lake landscape. Its northeastern city border merges fluently into the Berlin region. As a former Prussian residence, Potsdam has a unique and large cultural heritage.

Already in 1990, this cultural landscape, consisting of about 20 representative castles and spacious gardens, was declared a world cultural heritage site. A vacation in Potsdam is strongly recommended for connoisseurs and lovers of baroque and Prussian architecture, but also for nature friends. 

The city’s landmark is the rococo castle „Sanssouci“, an airy, elevated magnificent building to which several terraces lead. It is, just like the baroque “New Castle” (neues Schloss), a part of the sweeping Sanssouci park. The “Marble Palais” on the Peacock Island is also remarkable.

Aside from a visit to the castles, you should not miss a stroll through the city center which is well worth seeing. The “Old Market” marks the historic core of the city and shows buildings from all centuries. The baroque “New Market” – slightly hidden – is one of the most beautiful plazas in Germany
Other than the many museums with different themes, you can visit the “ Babelsberg Film Park” and experience great works of movie history on the grounds of the Babelsberg film studios.
