Palawan, Visayas
Palawan - the original province of the Philippines
Palawan is the main island of the Philippine province of the same name, lying far west of the Visayas. A total of 1,780 smaller islands and atolls belong to the province of Palawan.
The elongated main island separates the South Chinese Ocean from the undulated Sulu Sea. On its coast, in the centre of the island, lies Palawan’s capital Puerto Princesa. With its about 162,000 inhabitants, it is the island’s only big city and at the same time economic centre and multicultural meeting-point for immigrants from the entire Asian area.
Palawan’s landscapes are characterised by mountain ranges, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps and beautiful, snow-white sandy beaches.

Diving tourists and individualists will particularly enjoy travelling to the pristine north, where they can find accommodation in smaller hotels, holiday flats and guest houses on the beaches.
Some of the places on the island which are well worth seeing are the unique lake landscapes of the Coron reef in the north, the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park off the south eastern coast and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
The national park is part of the world natural heritage and is located in the north of the island, in the area of the St. Paul Mountain Range. In its vast, unspoilt environment, visitors will find the longest subterraneous river of the world, amongst others. It is possible to go there by boat. The river leads through bizarre cave sceneries with ancient stalactites.
