The South Island - the green heart of New Zealand

New Zealand’s South Island combines many beautiful and unique landscapes. It is less populated than the industrial north and can be explored particularly well on round trips. In all regions, visitors will meet friendly and open-minded people and find nice accommodation in small hotels, holiday homes along the coastlines or in bed & breakfast places.

On the east coast, in the region of Canterbury, green meadows extend from white sandy beaches to the peaks of the “Southern Alps“ with their highest mountain, the Aoraki.
Nelson, the north western part of the island, is characterised by vast national parks with old forests.

Then comes the wild and rugged, almost deserted west coast, which then turns into picturesque and unique fjord lands deep in the south. There, rushing waterfalls and tropical rainforests take turns and create an incomparably beautiful scenery. One of the best-known and most visited places of the South Island is Milford Sound.

Whether you hike in the green Southland, practise winter sports in Queenstown or relax on Lake Wanaka – the South Island is extremely diversified.

Snug towns like Christchurch or Dunedin, the Victorian seaport which was built of white limestone, are always worth a visit. On the coast, penguins, sea lions and walruses can be watched.
