The region of Montevideo – lively city life and green oases

Compared to other countries of Southern America Uruguay is a rather small country.  And its capital city Montevideo is the only settlement with more than one million inhabitants. By the way this is nearly the half of the population of the whole country. Thus Montevideo is the cultural and above all the economic centre of Uruguay. And also the place of residence of Mercosur, the common market of south America, is located here.

Despite all the hustle and bustle which not only such an important metropolis but also the South-American way of life in general brings along here in Montevideo there are surprisingly many quiet corners mainly within the magnificent parks which are particularly can be found in the area of the riverwalks. The real heart of Montevideo is densely structured and the city consists of more than 60 quarters, which in former times have been independent settlements in the region. As the years went by they have been incorporated to the capital city of Uruguay.

The ancient town of Montevideo is especially interesting for tourists. Countless shops, pubs and bars can be found here. Here the buzzling life which is so characteristic for South America pulses here. However it is very good to know that Uruguay is despite of its lust for life familiar as one of the safest countries of the world.

But despite the enchantment for the original life on the streets and markets of Montevideo one should also visit some of the famous museums and buildings which bear witness of art und culture of Uruguay which in this respect fits seamless into the history of Southern America.
