Mittenwald - A resort for all seasons

The small city of Mittenwald lies south of Munich almost directly on the border to Austria. The grand landscape of the Isel Valley and the majestic Karwendel Mountains form Mittenwald’s surroundings, the around 8000 inhabitants of which still stay true to their age old traditions, even as hosts, and make a vacation unforgettable for their guests.

The historic city center with its Bavarian houses and their beautifully painted facades, the so-called „Lüftlmalereien“, are worth seeing. The wonderful frescos on the archways in the pedestrian zone at the Upper Market will certainly catch the eye of an attentive observer.

The violin making museum in the city center exhibits the 300 year old tradition of the making of this instrument, the German center of which used to be Mittenwald. But nature itself has the best sights in the picture book landscape around Mittenwald. Hiking trails and bike paths lead through forests and over fields to the Leutasch Valley and the „Geisterklamm“ (ghost gorge) in which a footbridge crosses the steep ravine 50 meters above the ground.

One of the most beautiful trails starts at the summit of the Karwendel Mountain. Experienced mountain climbers will especially enjoy the “Mittenwalder Klettersteig” (Mittenwald climbing track).

In winter, when snow turns the Isel Valley into a charming winter wonderland and the time for skiers and snow hikers begins, they will find the best conditions and can return to their cozy hotels and pensions in Mittenwald in the evening.
