Middlesex – The Green Heart of Jamaica

Middlesex is county of Jamaica. It is located in the centre of the island and is divided into 5 regions, which are called Parishs.
Clarandon Parish is passed through by the river of Rio Minho and has, besides far open plains, also the mountain chain of the Bul Head Mountains. In Saint Mary Parish the highest elevation is even more than 1200 meter above sea level.

There you can also still find many traces of the Taino, the native inhabitants. Manchester Parish is very hilly area, which uses its dry climate for the cultivation of herbs, while Saint Cathrine is the industrial centre of Jamaica. Saint Ann Parish, with its long beaches, colourful gardens and objects of interest like the Dunns River Waterfall, is very interesting for tourists.

The friendly hosts there, no matter if you choose a large hotel or one of the small motels, take care to offer you relaxed days of vacation.  In Saint Ann Bob Marley was born, which makes the region to a place of worship for his fans.

Spanish Town used to be the capital city of the Island until 1872 and is still attracting a lot of visitors with its colourful street scene. The architecture is mostly marked by colonial style buildings. Especially the meeting-house of the government, Old House of Assembly, and the former residence of the governor, which is called King’s House, are worth to be visited.

In Spanish Town you can also find the oldest still preserved church of Jamaica. Saint Catherine’s Cathedral was built in 1714.
