Messel - residential town and world natural heritage

The municipality Messel is situated in South Hesse, in the midst of a densely wooded scenery which rank among the extensions of the picturesque Odenwald. For bicycle travellers and short term tourists - mainly in the surroundings - some holiday apartments and rural hotels are offered. Above all by the convenient traffic situation and the near position to Darmstadt, Dieburg and Frankfurt on the Main day tourists visit this small place which nationally reached famousness by the important pit discovery of fossils.

The pit “Messel" is located aside the centre. Already in 1875 the first important fossils were found there. Today geological guidances are organised and fascinates similarly visitors and scientists. An amply viewing platform provides a good overview all over the spacious arrangement.

The pit “Messel” belongs to the world natural heritage since 1995. However, also the city itself is worth a walk. Beside some commercial zones particularly new and modern housing estates were built. In the centre of Messel visitors will find two inns rich in tradition which also offers small holiday apartments for rent.

The historical half-timbered houses at “Langgasse” are worth seeing. The 15 km far-out city Darmstadt is also for the inhabitants of Messel a popular shopping centre and theatrical town. In the Hessian State Museum discoveries of the pit Messel are issued. In Darmstadt you will find several good city centre hotels.
