Means and east - Ireland, Ireland

The picturesque lake regions (Monaghan, Cavan, Longford, Westmeath, Roscommon, Offaly and Laois) are situated in Central Ireland. Fertile chalk plains, dim peat moors, green hills, mountains, wooded valleys and marshland are strung together here and invite tourists to extensive hikes.

The area around Dublin once was a battlefield, which was the scene of fierce fights. Pre-historic barrows, 19th century mansions and many ruins are, nowadays, monuments of the region’s living history.
Dun a Ri Forest Park, Kingscourt, Killykeen Forest Park and Cuilcagh Mountain (Cavan), the headwaters of the River Shannon, are excellent destinations for excursions. The Rock of Dunamase and the gardens of Emo Court are to be found near Portlaoise.

The old monastery in Fore and Athlone Castle (County Westmeath) are also worth a visit. A touch of muse blows in County Longford – here was the cradle of the author Oliver Goldsmith. County Monaghan, on the other hand, was the home of the poet Patrick Kavanagh. Birr Castle and the old monastery Clonmacnois (County Offaly) impress visitors coming from the city and fed up by big city neuroses.

Carton House and the obelisk Connolly’s Folly are to be found near Maynooth (Kildare). From White’s Castle, tourists will have a beautiful view of the River Barrow. They can spend the night either princely in quality hotels or individually in many motels and holiday homes.
