Matrei in Tyrol – Village on a height of three thousend meters

Matrei is the largest community of the eastern part of Tyrol. The community spreads through the complete Tauern valley and a part of the adjoining Iser valley and is surrounded by approximately 60 mountains with a height of more than 3,000 m.
Despite of the high number of guest-nights holidaymakers in Matrei can look forward to a calm, relaxing stay far from mass tourism activities.

The village with approximately 5,000 inhabitants has beautiful private accommodation in apartments, holiday homes and guesthouses. There are also smaller hotels on location.

The beautiful Tauern valley as centre of the holiday region „Hohe Tauern“ (Upper Tauern) offers opportunities for hiking, fly-fishing or for relaxation on alp meadows. The National park „Hohe Tauern“ invites all who want to climb, ride the mountain bike or want to enjoy rafting. Especially popular are the „Iseltal“ (Isel valley) bicycle route and theme theme walk, like the „walk of the senses“ or the „Great Tauern trek“ with a duration of three days which is accompanied by horses carrying the baggage.

Several worth seeing churches and chapels are located in Matrei and the near proximity as well as the castle Weißenstein. A down-home gastronomy, good shopping opportunities, children´s club hosting and many cultural events complete the summer holiday in the Tauern valley.

Those loving winter sports have best opportunities at the Goldried and the many adjacent snow-sure ski areas for a comfortable stay.
