Magdeburg – historical imperial residence with a modern flair

Magdeburg, the capital city of Sachsen-Anhalt, is located in the centre of the state at the Elbe River. The large city, in which almost 230.000 people live, can look back upon a more than 1.200 year old history, which is interestingly and illustratively explained to visitors in the different museums of the city.

The historical older area of the town, which you find between the city hall, the cathedral and the Elbe River, can easily be explored walking. Around 30 churches of different confessions, like the monastery “Our Beloved Lady” which was built in the 11th century, are open for visitors.  Also the post-modern “Green House”, the last creation of the famous architect Hundertwasser, is worth to be seen.

Travellers find a huge variety of different types of accommodation here, like holiday apartments, private rooms, hotels and boarding-houses, as well as modern apartments along the river shore within all price ranges.

Magdeburg is a very green city with almost 20 large parks and several public gardens, like the famous   Gruson-Greenhouses or the zoo. Along the river shore goes the “Elbe Cycle Track” through the meadows, which leads from Prague to Hamburg.

Different large malls replace the small shopping passages and are connected with each other by many gastronomic places. Visitors as well as inhabitants, who are keen on sports, come on their cost at the sports-and-leisure-mile Herrenkrug. But you will also find quiet places in this beautiful old city with its friendly hosts.
