Klaipeda – Lithuania’s floodgate to the world

Klaipeda is a seaport in the west of Lithuania at the mouth of the Courland Lagoon into the Baltic Sea. Much importance for the town has the ice free oil- and ferry harbour. If you inhabit a flat or hotel in Klaipeda, the affectionately restored half-timbered buildings in the Old Town will catch your eye. The constructions rather atypical for Lithuania are descended from a time as Klaipeda still was called Memel and a part of Germany.

Centrepoint of the Old Town is the theatre square which is governed by the Simon-Dach-Brunnen. In the comfortable sidewalk cafés in the centre you will make acquaintance with the lovable people of Klaipeda. The small museum of Lithuania will make yourself familiar with the eventful history of the third-biggest town of Lithuania.

The interesting treasury is also open to the public in the watch- and in the sea-museum. The Delphinarium shows presentations with trained dolphins and sea lions. The miles long sandy beach is a centre of attraction for water rats and sunbather. While your stay in a flat or hotel in Klaipeda an excursion to the sculpture park or to the pinewoods in the north of the city is also profitable.

The international castle jazz festivals which take place yearly in June, as well as the oceanic-party in July where you can experience the special atmosphere of Klaipeda at folklore shows and a craftsman`s market belong to the most famous celebrations of Lithuania.
