The Central Spanish community of Castile and the community of León, which borders on Portugal in the west (Castilla y León), houses 50 % of all Spanish national treasures, 112 historical cities and more than 200 castles; thus, the two communities form the cultural centre of the former Spanish Empire.

The Old Town of the University City of Salamanca, the cathedral of Burgos or the convent of St. Theresia in Ávila are just some of the unique tourist destinations. A finca, a holiday home, a hotel or a guesthouse are just some of the many possibilities for adequate accommodation. Holiday rooms and holiday flats in old cottages are, as number one of Spain’s rural tourism, a true Castilian speciality.

Tourists who stay here will be able to choose from a wide range of activities offered by the local Centros de Turismo Rural. On canoe trips, hikes, horse rides or cycling tours, holidaymakers can explore the perhaps largest nature landscape of Western Europe.

But despite the mountainous atmosphere, water also plays a big role for relaxation in the thermal baths and spas in the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos and Salamanca. Adventurers can also take advantage of the different forms of water on rafting tours or, in the winter, in one of the 21 skiing areas. Golf aficionados will come across a multitude of different golf courses.

But these are only some of the options to discover Spain’s cultural stronghold. It will not be easy to make a decision!
