Usedom Island, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

 

In terms of its size, Usedom is the second largest German island. The romantically inclined will feel their soul take wings here. Following the footsteps of Theodor Fontane, you can bask in Usedom´s peace and fresh air and enjoy the "view through the trees across the grey sea".

Many of the buildings hark back to the Kaiser´s private family album and the majesty of days gone by. Each of Usedom´s spa towns has its own history and sometimes its own small theatre. The historical bathing regulations in the Zinnowitz bathing museum will bring a smile to your face: men and women were only allowed to approach each other from the safety of bathing carts.

Bansin was the first bathing resort in Germany to receive an Imperial permit for open-air bathing. Ever since, visitors have been able to go to the beach, casually dressed in a bathing robe. The name Usedom comes from the Slavic and originates in the word ′uznam′, meaning estuary.

An island in the true sense of the word, Usedom is only accessible for a few hours a day when the bridges may be traversed, in order to allow larger ships to pass through the Peenestrom Strait. On Usedom, you can go horseriding, admire the spa architecture in the "3 Imperial baths" in Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin or enjoy a bike tour.

Usedom´s crowning glory is the accommodation on offer: whether in villaesque hotel palaces, or in idyllic holiday homes, you will feel equally comfortable and at ease.
