Off the Moroccan shore, the archipelago of Madeira rises out of the sea as a single big rock. Like its neighbouring island, Madeira is of volcanic origin and thus a relatively young island. But although the island offers comparatively little area, one of the highest mountains of Portugal lies here, the Pico Ruivo (1862 m). Another rocky superlative is the Cabo Girão, the world’s second largest cliff with 580 m.
Active tourists and explorers will find a true paradise with eternal spring in Madeira. They can hike through several micro-climates every day: the north is characterised by rainfall while the south offers subtropical climate and a blaze of colours.
