Hawaii - Idyllic volcanic islands

The string of islands known as Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean and consists of a total of 137 islands, the northwestern of whom form the 50th federal state of the USA. Hawaii is known as the "Aloha State", a title which is based on the open friendliness of its inhabitants and on the tropical climate. The islands are particularly popular with seaside holidaymakers.

The small town Waikiki on the island of O´ahu enjoys a reputation which is unique in the world. What is particularly impressive about it is its sandy beach, which is four kilometres long and lies in front of the picturesque scenery of the volcano crater Diamond Heat. Since Hawaii is of volcanic origin, tourists can visit many craters there.

The Hawai´i Volcanoes National Park, which has been established in 1917, has been part of the world natural heritage of the UNESCO since 1987.

Tourists can visit bizarre lava landscapes and even active volcanoes. One of the most popular attractions is a lava tunnel with about 300 metres of length. While accommodation for tourists on the different islands mostly consists of small, comfortably furnished holiday homes or holiday flats, guests in the capital Honolulu often stay in a hotel.

Honolulu, located on the south coast of the island O´ahu, is a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis with 380,000 inhabitants, whose cityscape is characterised by glass high-risers and the picturesque harbour. One of its sights is, besides the almost obligatory beach sections, ´Iolani Palace, which was built in 1882 as royal residence.
