Hamburg-Altona, City Hamburg

 

Hamburg’s Altona district stretches along the Elbe River west of the city center. If you spend you vacation in a vacation home or apartment or in a hotel in Altona, you will not only discover upper middle class domestic culture but also some idyllic spots.
In the 17th century, Altona’s avenue, the Palmaille, was built.  Neo-classical middle class houses flank Hamburg’s green oasis and have a beautiful view from their balconies.

The Altona Museum exhibits a profile of civilization and the culture of the Northern German costal area. Not only ship building and fishing are documented here, but also the domestic culture of past centuries.

Hamburg’s old-established zoo Hagenbeck allows a stroll through all parts of the Earth.  The animals are kept in spacious enclosures which are adapted to their natural habitats. If you would like to keep your walk in Altona, you should pass by the sandy beaches and the piers and explore the bank of the Elbe River. 

It ends in the romantic Oevekgoenne where the quaint piloting houses and their colorful gardens are and you will find historic cutters anchored in the Harbor Museum. A stop in the cozy „Strandperle“ cafe belongs to a vacation in Altona. If you drive along the 9 kilometer long Elbe Causeway, you will pass by exquisite parks and the grand villas of Hamburg’s upper class.

Your arrival point is the former fishing village, Blankensee, which has now developed into a true treasure at the edge of this large city. Aside from the noble houses of Hamburg’s moneyed nobility, you will also discover some winding paths decorated with flowers.
