Fuerteventura, Canary islands

The philosopher Miguel de Unamuno, who had been banned on Fuerteventura, described the island as “oasis in the desert of civilisation“. This sentence makes sense when you think of the island’s location off the Moroccan coast. The Sahara rubs off on this pearl by filling the broad beaches with sand when the wind blows east.

Particularly in the east, a good job was done in order to present visitors the crystal clear water in a comfortable ambience. It cannot be generally said whether tourists can best enjoy it at close range or from a balcony of one of the many hotels and guesthouses.

During the day, visitors can test to their heart’s content the wide variety of water sports like water skiing, diving, surfing and swimming, of course. After sunrise, various clubs and bars wait for presenting their offers. But also visitors who like tranquillity will find much to explore on Fuerteventura.

The dune national park near Corralejo in the north of the island is legally protected. In contrast to the virtually peaceful east coast, tourists can marvel at the wild Atlancic Ocean with its elemental forces in the west. The mountainous interior of the island displays a landscape with a totally different character due to its bare, dry deserts.
