Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh - Athens of the north

The fact that Edinburgh used to be called „The Auld Reekie“ due to its many smoking chimneys has almost been forgotten. Today on the other hand, the capital of Scotland is lovingly known as the “Athens of the North”.

Edinburgh lies on the east Scottish coast at the „Firth of Forth“, an estuary of the North Sea. If you view the city from above, you will see how it stretches over several hills – this gave the city a further nickname; “The City of Seven Hills”.

Edinburgh is well equipped for its visitors from all over the world, and thus travelers can choose from a large offer of pension rooms, vacation homes or apartments or hotels. From there you can start to explore Edinburgh, which has been the seat of the Scottish Parliament since 1999.

Edinburgh Castle is, without a doubt, the city’s most important landmark. The castle, which thrones majestically over Edinburgh, was built in the 11th century, some of its preceding structures even date back to the 7th century. The so-called Royal Mile, the historic main street of Edinburgh, starts here at the castle.

At the other end of this street, you will find Holyrood Palace, where the British Royal Family resides when visiting Edinburgh. The Saint Giles Cathedral of 854 is the most prominent church in Edinburgh.
