Norway East - History and Landscape

Oslo from Holmenkollen
Oslo from Holmenkollen
The harsh nature with its diversified, picturesque scenery, the geographic position near the Arctic Circle and last but not least the friendliness of the people who live there have turned Norway into an attractive tourist destination. Additionally, there are a number of historical sites that allow visitors of the third largest Scandinavian country to have a closer look at the country’s past.

Holidays, linked with a time travel amidst impressive, breathtaking scenery, among hospitable people – enjoy the tranquillity in little holiday houses or hotel resorts in picturesque surroundings – holidays at your fingertips.
The east of Norway, along the Swedish-Finnish border, doesn’t fall short of this in any way – even if the traveller has to do without the typical fjord scenery for a start. When travelling further northwards, however, this will abruptly change.

Oslo, Norway’s capital city, is a perfect starting point for a trip to the interesting east of the country. Lillehammer, which hosted the Olympic Games in 1994, is situated somewhat north of the metropolis. Despite modern buildings, such as the gigantic Håkon hall and the unique Lillehammer hotel resort, the visitor also comes across tracks of history.

One of the relics of the past is, for example, the open-air museum Maihaugen, where time seems to have stood still for ages. Still further east, there is the small town Elverum and the popular winter sports resort Trysil, which is located near the Swedish border.

Now and again, large holiday home resorts enliven the image of pristine nature. Small hotels in front of the picturesque scenery invite the guest to stay and offer some insights into the Norwegian cuisine – time to rest.
