Canton Graubuenden, Switzerland

 

Deep in the east of Switzerland lies the largest of the country’s cantons: Graubünden. One of the official languages of this canton is Rhaeto-Romanic, in addition to Italian and German. The fact that Switzerland is a very mountainous country becomes particularly apparent here: two of Graubünden’s summits peak at over 4,000 metres of height, a total of about 462 mountains reach a height of at least 3,000 metres.

Regions like Davos, Arosa and Oberengadin are well-known holiday destinations; is it perhaps because they are just beautiful? It should also be mentioned that no other canton in Switzerland possesses such a multitude of mighty castles. Those loving winter sports have surely already heard of Davos. Ice sports, sledding, skiing and snowboarding: everything is possible here. Skiers can choose between a total of five skiing regions. If you like, you can also enjoy skiing at night. Or do you prefer a stay with friends in one of the many alpine huts where you can still your hunger with a fondue?

For those who prefer watching winter sports to exercising: according to the organiser, Parsenn Derby is the oldest downhill event of the world; you can look forward to ski aces in the team race and to exciting single competitions.

Near Davos lies Arosa, which is also an important skiing region with more than 70 kilometres of pistes. Further winter sports tips are two towns called Flims, near which there is a big skiing region, and Bever in the Engadin.
