Canton Basel-Landscape, Switzerland

 

If someone talks about the Swiss canton of Basel, you must first of all ask: "What do you mean? Basel-Country or Basel-City?"

Without doubt it can be said: both cantons are beautiful. The climate in the city of Basel is mild and sunny; traversed by the River Rhine, close to France and Germany, it is considered as city of music and museums. The canton of Basel-Country, on the other hand, invites visitors to extensive hikes and enchants them with romantic scenery, waterfalls, blooming cherry trees, and even a small Grand Canyon. And – totally unexpected – you will also come across lamas here: those who like exceptional things can do lama trekking through Swiss landscapes in the canton of Basel.

Nature aficionados will love the canton of Basel-Country: they will encounter riverside forests in Reinach Heath; oak forests in the nature reserve Wildenstein, pristine wood lakes and streams; and mighty waterfalls, for example in the beautiful hiking area Wasserfallen, where tourists can also explore nature by going on a tour with the aerial cableway. Skiing is also possible here.

Splendid castles such as Wildenstein Castle look upon the scenery, just as relics of the region’s Roman past, for example the Roman settlement Augusta Raurica: the Roman theatre, in particular, is well-preserved; children will probably best like the animal park with old breeds of domestic animals.
