Calais – worth more than being the origin of the channel ferry

Everyone thinking of Calais, the harbor city in the utmost North of France thinks automatically about the ferries to the United Kingdom. Because the British Channel is especially narrow here and therefore the crossing is extremely cheap and fast. And in fact more than 60 ferries arrive and depart daily in Calais – the most of them from and to Dover.

The thereby resulting 30,000,000 travelers passing through every year have the choice between numerous hotels, due to the fact that at the end there is not always a direct connection to a ferry.

One is not fair to Calais if one reduces the city exclusively on the harbour and the ferries. In contrary the holidaymakers should use the opportunities for overnight stays in order to explore the city itself.

The sculpture „The burghers of Calais“ has a high meaning for all loving arts; it is placed in front of the city hall of Calais. The buildings can be traced back to the early 20th century and complies with  the architectural style of the Flemish renaissance.

Its bell tower also embosses in the typical slender Flemish form is part of the world cultural heritage. This is also the fact for the Tour de Guet in the ancient town. It was used as tower of fortification in the 13th century and was both telegraph and lighthouse in the 19th century. This last mentioned function yet is transferred to a specially constructed tower at the harbor. You have a magnificent panoramic sight on Calais and its neighborhood.
