Borkum, North Sea (Ost-Friesland)

 

Borkum is the most Western of the East-Frisian island. It is located western of the island of Juist near the border to the Netherlands. It is accessible with the sea ferry starting at Emden. A connection by ferry is also available to the harbor of Eemshaven in the Netherlands.

Although it has been a rufuge for pirates in the later medieval age it is in contrary nowadays a very popular and frequently visited holiday island. Even since the mid of the 19th century tourists are traveling to this island and since that time the tourism is the main source of income for the inhabitants of the island. Many inhabitants rent apartments, holiday houses or holiday flats . However there is also a handoms number of hotels, boarding houses and camping sites available.

Borkum has beaches especially in its Northern part and as a officially recognized Sea cure bath also has very ample facilities for cures.
The mud-flats Sea which is located Southern of the island invites visitors for extensive walks which are offered as guided tours. Borkum has sights which are really special.

The first electric lighthouse of Germany is located on Borkum which was built between 1887 and 1889. Furthermore there is a narrow gauge train traveling even nowadays between the city centre and the harbor of the main village Borkum.

The fun bath „Gezeitenland“ (land of tidal) is one of the largest fun baths in Europe.
