Bochum, Ruhr area

 

In the midst of the middle Ruhr Bochum is situated. Moreover, the about 380,000 inhabitants counting city is the sixth largest town in North Rhine-Westphalia and is arranged among the 20 largest towns of the Federal Republic of Germany. The city which was mentioned first in 890 for the first time was and is a place of religious and ethnic tolerance.

Beside the numerous Christian churches several Islamic municipalities and a Jewish municipality which was new-established in 2005 are located in this town. This is also positively reflected by the multicultural affected and foreign-friendly inhabitants. Culturally you can call Bochum absolutely as a "piece of jewellery" in the Ruhr. Many museums are resident in Bochum. The most famous ones are the Museum Bochum-Art Collection, with numerous pieces of art of the 20th century, or the German mining museum. It testifies to the long history of the coal mining in Bochum.

The railway museum Dahlhausen concedes an interesting insight into the history of the railway. Besides, numerous buildings testify the fundamental importance of Bochum as a mining-town, commercial town and industrial town.

Before the year 1988 Bochum became known by the German-speaking premiere of the musical Starlight Express. In the Starlight hall which was specially built for this can you can still watch this unique spectacle.
