Steglitz – Between Fichtenberg and Schlossgalerie

Together with Zehlendorf, Steglitz forms the most south-western district of Berlin. In Steglitz Berlin shows a side, which is peaceful as well as busy.  The former Prussian village Steglitz was built in the shadow of the 68 meter high Fichtenberg, which is still one of the preferred residential areas of the inhabitants.  On the Fichtenberg the famous Water Tower, designed by Otto Techow, is located, which is the symbol of Steglitz.

The Fichtenberg is right next to the Botanical Garden. Here you can find more than 20.000 different plants from all parts of the world. Far above the roofs of Berlin-Steglitz, you can notice the 68 meter high tower of the St. Matthew’s Church, which was built in 1880 in the brick gothic style of the Mark of Brandenburg.

The neo-Gothic town hall was perfectly adjusted into the shopping-centre “Das Schloss”. People, who spend their vacation in one of the hotels in Berlin or holiday-apartments of Steglitz, will find here a first-rate shopping-temple.

One of the most popular shopping-areas of Berlin is also the almost 2 kilometre long Schlossstrasse. The Steglitzer Kreisel, an office-complex with an administration building that has 27 floors, is an example for modern architecture. The numerous open-air restaurants in Berlin-Steglitz are perfect places for recreation and relaxation within the big city.

The district of Lichterfelde is narrow connected with the person of Otto Lilienthal. He started many of his attempts to fly here and a memorial site reminds of the famous aviation pioneer.
