Prenzlauer Berg, lovingly called  "Prenzl´berg" by its inhabitants, is perhaps one of the most interesting quarters of Berlin. In GDR times, this district had the reputation of a „Berlin Monmartre“, already back then mostly artists, intellectuals and squatters lived here. The houses were covered in graffiti and the plaster crumbled off the walls.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, students came here, drawn by the low rents. Eventually these people began to earn more money, but they did not want to leave their old district. Today, not much is left to remind one of the former dingy district. Complete housing blocks were renovated, hotels in Berlin and apartments were opened.
