Winter in Prenzlauer BergPrenzlauer Berg, lovingly called  "Prenzl´berg" by its inhabitants, is perhaps one of the most interesting quarters of Berlin. In GDR times, this district had the reputation of a „Berlin Monmartre“, already back then mostly artists, intellectuals and squatters lived here. The houses were covered in graffiti and the plaster crumbled off the walls.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, students came here, drawn by the low rents. Eventually these people began to earn more money, but they did not want to leave their old district. Today, not much is left to remind one of the former dingy district. Complete housing blocks were renovated, hotels in Berlin and apartments were opened.

There are trendy bars in Prenzelberg, as well as small art galleries and boutiques. One of the liveliest places of the district is the Kollwitz Square. On Saturdays the large eco-market takes place here.

Well-earning media producers buy new bio fruit for their whining offspring. Speaking of which, the birthrate in Prenzl’berg is one of the highest in Germany. The district is alive with playgrounds, stores for wooden toys, Waldorf schools and other bilingual facilities.

The younger population lives around the Kastanienallee. On the weekends you will see hordes of pleasure-seekers making a night of it. There are many pensions and vacation homes around Eberswalder Street where allegedly you will find the best Curry Sausage in all of Berlin.
