Basse-Normandy (Eng.: Lower Normandy) is the name of a region on the English Channel in northern France. It consists of the departments of Orne, Manche and Calvados. The main city of this region is Caen.
It is a well visited vacation region in which many people from all over the world spend their vacation. The main point of interest in this region is, without a doubt, the rock island Mont-Saint-Michel in front of the coast near Avranches. On this island, about one square kilometer in size, a Benedictine monastery has existed since the 8th century, in which a few monks still live today.
