Description of environment:

The De Kaap Valley in which Barberton lies, is renowned worldwide for its ancient rock formations which are some 4-billion years old. Situated 350km east of Pretoria and named after prospectors Graham Barber and his cousins Fred and Harry, who discovered gold here in 1884, the town mushroomed with the arrival of fortune-hunters who worked hard and played even harder! Within a year it was chockful of bars where barmaids, including the notorious Cockney Liz, did a roaring trade after hours as ladies of the night. With the discovery of the Witwatersrand gold fields, the town quietened down almost overnight, but fortunately many nostalgic relics of those brawling mining days remain: the Gold Stock Exchange, the first in South Africa, Stopforth and Fernlea House, two original wood and iron houses. Belhaven House Museum - a charming Victorian home, the 1901 Anglo-Boer War blockhouse, the Lewis and Marks Building (the first double storey in town) and Sheba Mine, the richest working gold mine in the world on the route to the ruins of Eureka city. (NB: A bad road. Only pre-booked tours with a local tour operator allowed.)

Barberton is also of course "Jock of the Bushveld's" town: there is a statue of this much-loved Staffordshire bull-terrier in front of the Town Hall, and an acacia tree about 7km out of town on the R38, where his master, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, often outspanned on the trek.

The 20km cableway from Barberton to the Havelock Asbestos Mine in Swaziland is a marvel of engineering, and there are lovely scenic drives around the town in all directions and hiking trails lasting a few hours.

Barberton, being the undiscovered gem of the Lowveld, ‘the Wild Frontier’, offers many attractions: hiking trails, scenic drives, visiting a gold mine, the Heritage Walk starting at the museum and many more
