Hamburg, Wilhelmsburg – an “Elbinsel” becomes town quarter

At this part of town of the Hanseatic City Hamburg which belongs to the district Hamburg-Mitte (center), it is about the more or less big “Elbinsel”. Here on a surface on 35.3 square kilometres live about 49,000 people. Wilhelmsburg offers not only a nice residential area to its guests, but also different hotels, pensions and holiday apartments. Also the part of town Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg disposes a few own places of interest. Besides, it is a favourable starting point for a visit of Hamburg. Two other centres of attraction in Wilhelmsburg are the windmill "Johanna" in Kirchdorf and the flak bunker at “Neuhöfer Straße” which originated from the Second World War.

This gigantic bulwark should be sprinkled and destroyed in 1947. Indeed, the bunker trembled by the pressure of the immense explosion, but refused to cave in. If the quarter Wilhelmburg is being explored, the sightseeing tour can be continued in the remaining part of the Hanseatic city.
