Belgium south (Wallonie), Belgium
When the fog lifts a little bit and the morning dew sparkles on the grass, a new day begins in the magical forests of the Walloon Region. More than a third of this French-speaking southern half of Belgium is wooded; its main part lies in the Ardennes. In the middle of these fantastic woods, many different secluded religious communities can be found.
In the uncountable abbeys and monasteries, they dedicated themselves to the perfection of brewing beer – true to tradition. Today, innumerable hiking and cycling trails can be found throughout the woods and connect uncountable castles and palaces. The Walloon Region can pride itself with the probably largest concentration of castles worldwide.
The old waterways can still be cruised by canoe or kayak, but visitors can also practise other sports such as rafting, rock climbing or mountain biking in the depths of Wallonia. Apart from the idyll and mysticism of nature, you can also feel the Belgian soul in more than 400 museums.
Enjoy the culinary and handcraft traditions on the countryside or in the many towns and cities. Liege is the cultural centre of Wallonia, whose 1000 year-old history is told by the unspoilt cityscape – a story which you can listen to in numerous city cafes.
The official capital city, however, is Namur – a feast for the eyes which spreads out on the confluence of Sambre and Maas under the mighty citadel. There are innumerable further reasons to visit the mystic region of Wallonia and choose between a hotel or a holiday flat, a guesthouse or a holiday home. Come and spend enchanted holidays in Wallonia!
