Cycle paths, canals, castles, and much more you will find in Flanders

“Doubly deep-fried” – a short statement which discloses the secret of the Belgian fries but also reveals a lot about the rustical handcraft culture of our Belgian neighbours. Chocolate and more than 500 sorts of beer also attest to cockaigne-like circumstances. But visitors can not only explore culinary delicacies but also architecture and arts. Particularly the capital city of Flanders, Antwerp, is an accredited treasury of baroque bijous and diamonds. Belgium’s best-known castle named Gaasbeek is located in the province of Flemish Brabant.

The hoof beat of the heavy dray horses indicates the pulse around the old beer town Leuven. Rural life with beer and roast in the beautiful restaurants invites tourists to dismount their bikes and have a rest. The “Tour of Flanders” regularly led professional cyclists to the province of East Flanders with the capital city Gent.

But directly on the frontier with Germany, in the province of Limburg, lies Belgium’s most important bike track with more than 700 kilometres of bike paths through deep forests, along elegant canals, past magnificent castles. Following the canals, cyclists will eventually reach Bruges, one of the most important medieval seaports, which today is still the capital city of the province of West Flanders. Here, Belgium is delimited by the North Sea, where tourists can enjoy themselves in family-friendly bathing resorts.

Many holiday homes and holiday flats, guesthouses and hotels offer a wide range of leisure facilities for the whole family, for example in baths like Blankenberge, Knokke-Heist with its villas or See Bruges, the international centre for fresh fish where tourists will find delicious fish dishes in any restaurant – exactly according to the unwritten laws of Belgian taste.
