Alentejo, Portugal

A trip through Alentejo is like meeting the traditional Portugal. It seems as if clocks have not been invented yet here.

Across the River Tejo – além Tejo – wheat sets the pace of rural life. The golden colour of seemingly endless wheat fields only sometimes mingles with white picturesque villages. In the west, Alentejo is limited by lonely beaches which have not yet been discovered by mass tourism while in the east, the Serra de São Mameda reaches up to 1,000 m high.

Quinta De Santo António

Quinta De Santo António, Apartado 206, 7350-903 Elvas

Quinta is a typical Alentejo "Monte", which is the Portuguese for a very large farming estate.
The Quinta's private chapel was constructed in 1715. This small 5-star rural hotel with 37 rooms is near Elvas, a town famous for its sugar plums. It was a fortified town to protect against invasion by Spain. On the other side of the border, the Spanish town of Badajoz has similar fortifications to protect the inhabitants from the Portuguese!

But despite its rural character, Alentejo is considered as one of the baroque centes of Portugal. Its capital city Évora, for example, was accredited as World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

But the true attraction of Alentejo is not to be found in the buzzing city. It is rather the naturalness of its sleepy villages that invites visitors to stay. Here they can learn the "Sesta", the Portuguese sort of afternoon nap, from the locals.
